What Kinds of Dental Fillings Are out There?

Posted .

Have you been taking good care of your pearly whites with a daily regimen of brushing and flossing? Have you noticed any tooth decay, a chipped tooth, or suspect a fractured tooth? If so, it may be time to see your dentist to get a dental restoration. Dental fillings restore damaged teeth so that you can bite and chew the way your teeth need to.

There are several dental restoration materials available to repair your teeth. Dental fillings come in the following materials:

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings have historically been around the longest and are made from a combination of gold and copper material, among others. They are very durable, but they also cost more than other dental fillings, and they stand out in your mouth, unlike composite resin fillings.

Amalgam Fillings

Another common choice is amalgam fillings. Made from a variety of metals including silver, copper, and mercury, they are stronger than composite resins, but they are more visible as well. They are perhaps the most affordable of all fillings so they will keep your budget happy.

Composite Resin Fillings

With the miracle of technology, these are becoming more and more popular with patients. Made from glass, quartz and plastic, they are white and blend in with your natural teeth. Composite fillings bonds to your teeth which supports them so they are strong and don’t crack easily.

Placement of the filling is another factor that may help you decide. You can use gold or amalgam fillings to fill your back teeth where they are least visible, and where the teeth do the most work of chewing your food. Composite teeth are nice for the more visible front teeth.
